\"\"<\/a>I’ve just learned about a vegetable CSA program in the Houston area–Twin Persimmons Farm<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0If you’re not familiar with a CSA, here’s the Wikipedia definition<\/a>:<\/p>\n

A CSA consists of a community of individuals who pledge support to a farming operation where the growers and consumers share the risks and benefits of food production. CSAs usually consist of a system of weekly delivery or pick-up of vegetables and fruit . . . and sometimes includes dairy products and meat.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Twin Persimmons Farm is located in southeast Grimes County and grows produce for Houston, Bryan, College Station, and surrounding communities.\u00a0\u00a0 They are hoping to increase the number of customers in the Woodlands, Cypress, and Conroe.<\/p>\n

The farm specializes in “gourmet vegetable varieties that are rare or unavailable in produce markets including many heirloom varieties that taste great but aren’t available in supermarkets because they do not withstand the rigors of shipping.”\u00a0 The farm’s goal is to deliver a share of vegetables 30 weeks per year at $30\/week.\u00a0 As is typical for a CSA, the consumer commits to support the farm for a year with payment in advance, due January 1 each year.\u00a0\u00a0The contents of the CSA share can vary greatly each week, and, according to the website, should be enough to feed 2-4 adults.<\/p>\n

Twin Persimmons farmer Hans Hansen answered my request for information about his farming practices by saying that he farms sustainably and uses organic practices exclusively.\u00a0 In fact, he says he rarely uses some pesticides considered acceptable under restrictive organic standards.\u00a0 So his farm\u00a0is beyond organic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
