{"id":4624,"date":"2013-06-03T12:44:24","date_gmt":"2013-06-03T17:44:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/?p=4624"},"modified":"2013-06-04T10:09:05","modified_gmt":"2013-06-04T15:09:05","slug":"four-houston-restaurants-have-been-added-to-real-food-restaurants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.realfoodhouston.com\/wp-files\/2013\/06\/03\/four-houston-restaurants-have-been-added-to-real-food-restaurants\/","title":{"rendered":"Four Houston restaurants have been added to Real Food Restaurants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/wp-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Local-Foods.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4632\" alt=\"Local Foods - Houston TX\" src=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/wp-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Local-Foods.jpg\" width=\"220\" height=\"186\" \/><\/a>A reader has suggested some new additions to the <a href=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/real-food-restaurants\/\">Real Food Restaurants<\/a> listing, plus I&#8217;ve added another that I have long wanted to try; however, it&#8217;s on the exact opposite side of Houston from where I live.\u00a0 Although I have not yet visited any of these restaurants, a review of available information indicates that they belong on our list.\u00a0 If you have visited any of these, please comment about your experience.\u00a0 Do they belong on the list and why?\u00a0 Also, do they serve food that tastes good while being nutritious?\u00a0\u00a0 Eating Real Food should be enjoyable!\u00a0 Local, fresh food should be the best tasting food as well as the best for your health.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the four restaurants added to Real Food Restaurants:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.houstonlocalfoods.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Local Foods<\/a> advertises a \u201cgourmet selection of sandwiches, salads and prepared meals with local ingredients.\u201d\u00a0 Their website lists these local food sources:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gundermannacres.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gundermann Farms <\/a>(organic),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.atkinsonfarm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Atkinson Farms<\/a>\u00a0(no claim to be organic),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.animalfarmcenter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Animal Farm<\/a>\u00a0(organic per\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/animal-farm-cat-spring\" target=\"_blank\">Yelp review<\/a>),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/store.texashillcountryoliveco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Texas Hill Country Olive Oil<\/a>\u00a0(organic olives), Texas wild gulf shrimp, and Hatterman Egg Farm (free range and no soy per\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanharvest.org\/farmmarket\/market\/vendors\/hattermann.html\" target=\"_blank\">Urban Harvest review<\/a>, have high omega 3\u2032s and no soy per\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.houstonpress.com\/eating\/2010\/07\/local_spotlight_hattermanns_ya.php\" target=\"_blank\">HoustonPress review),<\/a>\u00a0Pola Cheese (artisan cheese made in the Montrose area per\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.houstonpress.com\/eating\/2010\/05\/pola_artisan_cheeses.php\" target=\"_blank\">HoustonPress review<\/a>), and others.\u00a0 Most of those listed seem to be excellent sources of local, Real Food.\u00a0 Local Foods sandwich menu lists Duck Confit, House Smoked Salmon, and \u201cBanh Mi.\u201d\u00a0 Salads include Spring Harvest Salad and Asian Chicken Salad.\u00a0 Sides include Housemade Chips, but there is no information about the fat used for frying.\u00a0 Beverages include kombucha, beer, and wine, but there\u2019s no claim to be organic for any drink.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rootsbistrohouston.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Roots Bistro<\/a>: the website says they are \u201cLocal. Organic. Green.\u201d\u00a0 They are the second Green-Certified Restaurant in Houston.\u00a0 They claim that \u201cEverything from the animal chef butchers to the salt that flavors it is locally sourced and organically grown.\u201d\u00a0 However, I was unable to find any backup information about their ingredients.\u00a0 Reviews on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanspoon.com\/r\/8\/1673193\/restaurant\/Montrose\/Roots-Bistro-Houston\" target=\"_blank\">UrbanSpoon<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/roots-bistro-houston-3\" target=\"_blank\">Yelp<\/a>\u00a0varied widely.\u00a0 Many thought it was too expensive.<\/p>\n<p>Season\u2019s Harvest Cafe, in the Cypress\/Fairbanks area, (no website, but they have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Seasons-Harvest-Cafe\/371063685372\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a>\u00a0page featuring their daily menu which varies according to what is locally available) is a small, family owned, farm-to-table restaurant serving local, organic foods.\u00a0 There are vegetarian\/vegan and gluten-free options for some menu items.\u00a0 The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/seasons-harvest-cafe-houston\" target=\"_blank\">Yelp<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanspoon.com\/r\/8\/1656893\/restaurant\/Cypress-Fairbanks\/Seasons-Harvest-Cafe-Houston\" target=\"_blank\">UrbanSpoon<\/a>\u00a0reviews are generally favorable.\u00a0 Season\u2019s Harvest Cafe is open for breakfast and lunch, Tuesday through Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zelkobistro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Zelko Bistro<\/a>, owned and operated by Chef Jamie and Dahlia Zelko has New American Fare \u201cprepared with the highest quality and sustainable ingredients.\u201d\u00a0 Chef Jamie Zelko has been named Sustainable Restaurateur by H Magazine.\u00a0 The restaurant claims to be focused on local ingredients, and the website mentions using local, 100% raw honey; however, I could find very little specific information about their food sources.\u00a0 Both owners are beekeepers.\u00a0 The menu lists several fried foods but does not say what fat or oil is used for cooking.\u00a0 Reviews on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/zelko-bistro-houston-2\" target=\"_blank\">Yelp<\/a>\u00a0are uneven.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A reader has suggested some new additions to the Real Food Restaurants listing, plus I&#8217;ve added another that I have long wanted to try;
