will post from our delicious <a href=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/2013\/12\/28\/best-christmas-dinner-ever-thyme-roasted-chicken-baked-ham-veggies-and-real-gingerbread\/\">Christmas dinner<\/a>.\u00a0 This gingerbread was a real treat, a special occasion dessert.\u00a0 It was made with shredded fresh ginger and sprouted whole wheat flour and served with a dollop of sweet and smooth cream cheese and raw honey topping.\u00a0 It was the perfect ending to an excellent dinner.\u00a0 I will probably not wait for another holiday to make this gingerbread again.<\/p>\n<p>We rarely have dessert, but when we do, I want it to be made with the best and most nutritious ingredients possible.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how I made this gingerbread. . .<\/p>\n<h2>Gingerbread with Cream Cheese and Raw Honey Topping<\/h2>\n<p><em><strong>Ingredients<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>2 1\/4 cups sprouted whole wheat flour (I used <a href=\"http:\/\/www.organicsproutedflour.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">To Your Health Sprouted Flour<\/a>)<br \/>\n1 teaspoon baking soda (I used Bob&#8217;s Red Mill Baking Soda<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=reafoohou-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B000VK3RPY\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>)<br \/>\n1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (I used Frontier Ceylon Cinnamon<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=reafoohou-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B003PWC346\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>)<br \/>\n1\/4 teaspoon ground allspice (I used Frontier<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=reafoohou-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B001NHAR7A\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>)<br \/>\n1\/2 teaspoon salt (I use Celtic Sea Salt<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=reafoohou-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B009NT3JD4\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>)<br \/>\n1\/2 cup (4 ounces) butter, softened (I use Kerrygold butter)<br \/>\n2\/3 cup molasses<br \/>\n2\/3 cup sucanat (I used Rapunzel<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=reafoohou-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B001E5DZIO\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>)<br \/>\n2 large eggs, preferably from pastured chickens<br \/>\n3 tablespoons finely grated peeled organic ginger<br \/>\n2\/3 cup hot water<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Topping<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>8 ounces cream cheese, softened (I used Central Market organic cream cheese)<br \/>\n3 tablespoons raw honey (I used local raw honey from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Gulf-Coast-Honey-Bee-Farms\/181114738621147?fref=ts\" target=\"_blank\">Gulf Coast Honey Bee Farms<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Preparation<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.\u00a0 Butter a 9-inch square pan.\u00a0 Combine flour, baking soda, spices, and salt in a large bowl.<\/p>\n<p>With an electric mixer on medium speed, beat together butter, molasses, sucanat, eggs, and ginger in a large bowl until combined.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/wp-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Creamed-butter-and-sweeteners.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-5246\" alt=\"Creamed butter and sweeteners\" src=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/wp-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Creamed-butter-and-sweeteners-1024x768.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.realfoodhouston.com\/wp-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Creamed-butter-and-sweeteners.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.realfoodhouston.com\/wp-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Creamed-butter-and-sweeteners-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reduce speed to low and add in flour mixture until smooth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/wp-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Adding-the-flour-mixture.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-5252\" alt=\"Adding the flour mixtur\" src=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/wp-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Adding-the-flour-mixture-1024x895.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"559\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Add hot water and mix until combined.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/wp-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Adding-the-hot-water.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-5255\" alt=\"Adding the hot water\" src=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/wp-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Adding-the-hot-water-1024x821.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"513\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Put batter into the buttered pan and bake until a wooden toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 35 to 40 minutes.\u00a0 Cool in the pan on a rack.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/wp-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Baked-gingerbread.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-5248\" alt=\"Baked http:\/\/www.realfoodhouston.com\/wp-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Baked-gingerbread.jpg 903w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/wp-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Gingerbread-square-with-topping.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-5269\" alt=\"Gingerbread square with cream cheese topping\" src=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/wp-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Gingerbread-square-with-topping-300x286.jpg\" width=\"162\" height=\"155\" \/><\/a>The gingerbread may be eaten while warm, but I made mine the day before Christmas to save dinner prep time on the big day.<\/p>\n<p>To make the topping, place the cream cheese and honey in a food processor and blend well.<\/p>\n<p>Cut the ginger bread into squares and top each with a spoonful of cream cheese topping.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The topping is based on a recipe in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/recommended-reading\/\">Nourishing Traditions<\/a><\/em> by Sally Fallon.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note:\u00a0 I hadn&#8217;t bought enough fresh <\/em><em>ginger and had only about 2 tablespoons of grated g<\/em><em>inger, so I supplemented with 1\/2 teaspoon of organic ground ginger.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This post is shared on <a
