{"id":6020,"date":"2014-08-08T07:00:22","date_gmt":"2014-08-08T12:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/?p=6020"},"modified":"2016-04-26T20:26:13","modified_gmt":"2016-04-27T01:26:13","slug":"on-the-real-food-news-front-8814","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.realfoodhouston.com\/wp-files\/2014\/08\/08\/on-the-real-food-news-front-8814\/","title":{"rendered":"On the Real Food News Front &#8211; 8\/8\/14"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/wp-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mug-of-broth-and-newspaper-08-01-14.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6006\" src=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/wp-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mug-of-broth-and-newspaper-08-01-14-300x228.jpg\" alt=\"Mug of bone broth and newspaper\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" data-wp-pid=\"6006\" \/><\/a>I haven&#8217;t had time to publish any new posts this week, but I didn&#8217;t want to skip writing about the latest news.\u00a0 Breakfast today was a cup of bone broth (by now, you should not be surprised!) and a <a title=\"Banana Cocoa Smoothie\" href=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/2012\/12\/27\/banana-cocoa-smoothie\/\">banana cocoa smoothie.<\/a> Today&#8217;s smoothie was made with raw milk, frozen bananas, raw cacao, and egg yolks from local pastured hens.<\/p>\n<p>We have another meeting of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/HoustonRealFoodNutrition\/\" target=\"_blank\">Houston Real Food Nutrition<\/a> to announce!\u00a0 I am so excited that interest in nutrition to improve health is growing so much here in Texas that we have had to add a<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/HoustonRealFoodNutrition\/events\/199000972\/\" target=\"_blank\">second session<\/a><\/strong> about the topic Dr. Price&#8217;s research and principles of a nourishing traditional diet.<\/p>\n<p>To help our members who don&#8217;t live in Houston, Amy Robison and I are going to Wharton to do an encore presentation on August 24th.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been told that people are coming to Wharton from Yoakum and San Antonio to hear that one.\u00a0 Medina Farm is hosting the Wharton meeting and is offering some <strong>wonderful prizes<\/strong> for attendees&#8211;a dozen yard eggs, a quart of raw goat milk, and maybe some fresh feta cheese!\u00a0 Medina Farm has created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/717786738258020\/\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook event page<\/a> for the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/HoustonRealFoodNutrition\/events\/197251412\/\" target=\"_blank\">first meeting<\/a><\/strong> about traditional diets is on August 16th. I hope you can come to one of them!<\/p>\n<p>Also don&#8217;t forget on Sunday, August 10th, <strong>Grant Wilson of Gramen Farm<\/strong> will talk about raw milk and local organic produce at the <a carrier aircraft August 14th at 8 am. The combined height of both aircraft will be about that of an eight-story building. The public is invited to attend, but if you can&#8217;t be there, you can <a href=\"http:\/\/spacecenter.org\/look-up-in-the-sky\/\" target=\"_blank\">watch The Rise of Independence live<\/a>. I worked in the space program for many years and still find it exciting to know that we will be able to tour the inside of both the shuttle orbiter and the carrier when the exhibit is completed in 2015.<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>Now for other nutrition and health news . . .<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>I read a great article about climate change that I want to share with you.\u00a0 For some time, I have been convinced that the only way we can <strong>heal our earth<\/strong> is to stop poisoning it.\u00a0 Instead we need to nurture our soil, our animals, as well as ourselves. We have been treating living animals, plants, and people as inanimate objects for too long. \u00a0 Read more about <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/elizabeth-kucinich\/the-way-we-grow-food_b_5634675.html?utm_hp_ref=politics\" target=\"_blank\">We Can Reverse Climate Change by the Way We Grow Food<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2014\/08\/140807105436.htm\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> is showing that <strong>epigenetic changes<\/strong> in one generation can be passed down to future generations.\u00a0 A study of rats found that stress during pregnancy influenced the outcome of pregnancies in the grandchildren even when the parent had not been stressed.\u00a0 Environment does matter, and environment includes what we eat, what we breathe, what we absorb through the skin, and the stresses we live with.\u00a0 Have you read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Pottengers-Cats-Francis-Marion-Pottenger\/dp\/0916764060\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1401900547&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=pottengers+cats\" target=\"_blank\">Pottenger&#8217;s Cats<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>An interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenmedinfo.com\/blog\/7-natural-ways-cure-canker-sores-1\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> on GreenMedInfo tells about natural <strong>treatments for canker sores<\/strong> in the mouth.\u00a0 I used to have those painful sores but rarely have them since I changed my diet and quit using toothpaste containing sodium laurel sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, both of which irritate the mouth.\u00a0 If you are still troubled with canker sores (and more women than men have them, for unknown reasons), there are treatments with fewer side effects, including honey and vitamin B12,\u00a0 than the antiseptics, corticosteroids, or antibiotics commonly prescribed.\u00a0 Although the article also recommends avoiding dairy, I still drink raw milk and eat cheese.<\/p>\n<p>The number of <strong>farmers markets<\/strong> in the U.S. has increased 76% since 2008, [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cornucopia.org\/2014\/08\/new-data-reflects-continued-demand-farmers-markets\/\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a>] and the USDA has developed a database,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/search.ams.usda.gov\/farmersmarkets\/\" target=\"_blank\">USDA National Farmers Market Directory<\/a>, to help you find one in your area.\u00a0 To find farmers markets in the Houston area, go to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wapf-houston.org\/wapf-houston-wp\/farmers-markets-in-our-area\/\" target=\"_blank\">Farmers&#8217; Markets<\/a> page on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wapf-houston.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">WAPF-Houston.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s good and bad news about <strong>GMOs<\/strong>&#8211;good: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cornucopia.org\/2014\/08\/india-puts-gm-crop-trials-hold\/\" target=\"_blank\">India has put GMO crop trials on hold<\/a>, but bad: it looks like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cornucopia.org\/2014\/08\/usda-leaning-toward-approval-monsantos-new-gmo-beans-cotton\/\" target=\"_blank\">USDA will approve<\/a> new varieties of GMO soybeans and corn that are engineered to resist a combination of poisons, glyphosate and dicamba.\u00a0 The new soybeans will allow even more poisons to be sprayed on our food crops.<\/p>\n<p>If you are trying to stay away from GMOs by buying <strong>organic foods<\/strong>, the growing popularity of organic foods (and higher prices and profit margins) has attracted Big Food.\u00a0 Pressure is being applied to the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) to reduce restrictions and weakening the standards.\u00a0 Will we lose the benefit of the NOSB?\u00a0 [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cornucopia.org\/2014\/08\/demise-national-organic-standards-board\/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=demise-national-organic-standards-board\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>For <strong>mental heath<\/strong>, you might want to garden more often.\u00a0 There apparently is a microbe in the soil that influences serotonin production which will make us feel better.\u00a0 [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cornucopia.org\/2014\/08\/antidepressant-microbes-soil-dirt-makes-happy\/\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>More bad news about the side effects of <strong>statins<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>According to a new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25074346\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> published in Clinical Endocrinology, women who use statins have a 43% increased risk of thyroid cancer.\u00a0 Men have a 28% increased risk. [<a href=\"http:\/\/healthydietsandscience.blogspot.com\/2014\/08\/the-association-between-statins-ane.html\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a>]\u00a0 The benefits for women for taking statins is very small, and they have not been found to prevent heart attack.\u00a0 Read my post about women and statins, <a href=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/2012\/01\/31\/warning-women-in-danger-of-being-overprescribed-statins\/\">Warning!
