height=\"150\" \/><\/a>There&#8217;s more than one way to eliminate the small raw milk dairies.\u00a0 There <em>is<\/em> a war on raw milk, but those attacking raw milk don&#8217;t always carry guns.\u00a0 The costs of producing safe raw milk were just too high for Holly and Steve Atkinson of Greenwood Farms, Missouri.\u00a0 The St. Louis Post-Dispatch <a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbiatribune.com\/news\/2011\/sep\/22\/raw-milk-dairy-closes-as-costs-rise\/\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that the Atkinsons made their final delivery\u00a0of raw milk last week.\u00a0\u00a0 Even though they had very good sales and their customers were willing to pay as much as $10 a gallon, they were unable to keep up with the costs of feed,\u00a0fuel to deliver the milk, production equipment, and labor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Post-Dispatch article\u00a0reports that\u00a0Holly Atkinson said\u00a0they would have had to increase, maybe double,\u00a0the size of their dairy herd\u00a0to survive financially, and they did not believe they could have continued to produce safe milk with a larger dairy.\u00a0 It would have been too much like the factory dairies.\u00a0 As I posted earlier this week[See <a href=\"http:\/\/realfoodhouston.com\/2011\/09\/19\/5th-annual-far\u2026ce-san-antonio\/\">5th Annual Farm and Food Leadership Conference, San Antonio<\/a>], Ramy Jisha, owner of a small Texas raw milk dairy,\u00a0recommends a herd size of no\u00a0more than 100 cows.\u00a0 &#8220;Too many cows cause the process to become too impersonal.,\u00a0knowing the cows personally one-on-one\u00a0allows the farmer to notice problems before they become serious. &#8221;\u00a0The Texas certified dairy owner\u00a0spoke last week at the Farm and Food Leadership Conference in San Antonio.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know how the regulations for raw milk dairies\u00a0differ between Missouri and Texas, but I wonder if that could happen here.\u00a0 Additional costly, burdensome\u00a0requirements are continuously being proposed by regulatory agencies, encouraged by large agri-business corporations\u00a0who can readily afford the extra time and paperwork.\u00a0 When will the costs\u00a0be just too much for our farmers too?\u00a0\u00a0When will\u00a0the costs squeeze the Texas certified raw milk dairies\u00a0out of
